Packing Materials

The first step is to choose the right packing materials. You will need:

Wine Glass Boxes

These are specially designed boxes that hold about a dozen wine glasses. They have dividers to keep the glasses from moving around and bumping into each other. The best boxes have handles on them to easily carry them. Avoid using cardboard boxes that are not designed for wine glasses, as they will not offer the same level of protection.

DIY Wine Glass Boxes

If you can't find wine glass boxes, you can make your own out of cardboard boxes. Cut the top and bottom off of a box so that it is open on the top and bottom. Then, cut out dividers to fit inside the box. Make sure that the dividers are tall enough so that the wine glasses will not be able to touch each other.

Consider Glass Kit Cell Dividers

Glass kit cell dividers provide a padded layer of protection between each glass, preventing them from clinking together and potentially breaking. They also help stabilize the glasses so that they don't shift around during transport. And, if you're using them for long-term storage, the dividers will help prevent dust and other debris from accumulating on your glasses.

Packing Peanuts or Bubble Wrap

You will need packing peanuts or bubble wrap to fill the empty space in the box. This will keep the glasses from moving around and breaking.

Packing Tape

You will need packing tape to secure the lid of the box. The best types of tape are heavy-duty packing tape or clear packing tape. Avoid using duct tape, as it is not strong enough to hold the weight of the glasses.

NOT Newspaper

Do not use newspapers to wrap your wine glasses. Many people don't bother searching for how to pack wine glasses properly and use newspapers without thinking about it. The ink from the paper can rub off on the glasses and ruin them. Imagine putting all this effort into packing your glasses safely, only to have them arrive at your new home stained with ink!

The How-To

Now that you have all of your materials, you are ready to start packing.

Wrap Your Wine Glasses With Packing Paper

Anyone who has ever moved knows that packing up glassware is always a delicate task. Even the most carefully wrapped wine glasses can come out of their boxes cracked and broken. One way to help prevent this is to wrap the glasses in packing paper, like a burrito.

By putting multiple layers of paper around each glass, you can help to cushion it against impact and reduce the risk of breakage. This simple step can save you time and frustration when unpacking your wine glasses at your new home.

Cushion The Bottom of The Boxes

Once you have wrapped all of your glasses, it's time to start packing them into the boxes. But before you do, you should cushion the bottom of the box with packing paper and peanuts or bubble wrap. This will help to absorb any impact if the box is dropped and protect your glasses from breaking.

Pack the Wine Glasses

Now you can start packing the glasses into the boxes. If you are using traditional wine glass boxes, simply place the glasses into the box and fill any empty space with packing paper or peanuts. Be sure to nestle the glasses between the dividers if using DIY wine glass boxes. This will help to keep them from moving around and breaking.

Close & Secure Boxes With Packing Tape

Once the box is full, close it up and secure it with packing tape. And repeat the steps for each box. Be sure to use heavy-duty packing tape or clear packing tape so that the box will be securely closed.

Label Boxes

Be sure to label each box with "Fragile: Glasses" so that the movers will know to handle them with care. You may also want to include an arrow on the box to indicate which end is up. This will help prevent the boxes from being turned upside down and dropped.

Stack Boxes In The Moving Truck

When it's time to load up the moving truck, be sure to stack the boxes of glasses on top of other packages so that they won't get crushed. When loading the boxes into the moving truck, stack them carefully.

The heavier boxes should go on the bottom, and the lighter boxes should go on top. And if you have any extra space, be sure to fill it with pillows or blankets to help keep the boxes from moving around. You may also want to secure them in place with straps or ropes to prevent them from shifting during the move.

Unpacking Your Wine Glasses

When you arrive at your new home, carefully unpack the glasses boxes. Start by removing the packing paper and peanuts from the bottom of the box. Then, take out each glass and unwrap it.

Be sure to place the glasses upside down on a towel so that any water inside can drain out. Once all of the glasses are unpacked and upside down on the towel, let them air dry for 24 hours before using them. This extra step may not be necessary, depending on your situation.

Conclusion

Packing wine glasses for a move can be a daunting task, but you can pack them safely and efficiently with a bit of care and attention. By following the steps above, you can help prevent your glasses from breaking and make unpacking them at your new home a breeze. So, the next time you need to pack up your wine glass collection, keep these tips in mind. Your glasses will thank you for it!
