12 Creative Lego Storage Ideas

Few toys spark a child’s creativity quite like Legos. They encourage the development of problem-solving skills, prolonged and focused attention, and the ability to plan ahead. However, any parent of a Lego lover will tell you that nothing makes a mess quite like piles of thousands of tiny plastic bricks. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of creative Lego storage ideas to help parents keep things neat and organized.

1. Repurpose a Hanging Shoe Storage Bag

Rachel Silla Miller of One Crazy House uses a plastic shoe organizer as a Lego storage system, and we’re crazy about how easy and effective it is. This keeps all the Legos off the floor and out of the way, and kids can be encouraged to organize the blocks any way they see fit—by color, size, or any other method they dream up.

2. Creative QT’s SlideAway Toy Organizer

Creative QT’s SlideAway Toy Organizer offers an elegant solution to the timeless problem of toy messiness. Kids can turn this fabric storage bin on its side, which then opens up and unfurls to reveal an integrated play mat. When they’re done, it’s easy to slide all of the toys back into the bin, zip it up, and set it aside.

3. Make an Amazing DIY Lego Pick Up & Play Mat

Holly Homer at the Kids Activities Blog brings us a DIY convertible playmat that’s very much like the previous entry, only more customized. That’s great because it’s an easy afternoon project that you can even get the kids involved with. (In Holly’s case, she snuck some math in by having the kids help calculate the circumference of a circle to determine how long the drawstring rope needed to be!) Making a drawstring play mat also lets you cut the fabric to whatever size you need, depending on how many Legos your kids own.

4. Room Copenhagen 8 Lego Brick Box

Room Copenhagen makes slick, stackable Lego storage boxes that look like overgrown Lego blocks. These come in various sizes and colors, so you can mix and match them to customize your perfect storage solution. The largest size holds around 1,800 blocks.

5. Make a DIY Lego Wall

We love a good Lego wall since they provide a play surface for Lego-loving children and simultaneously keep Legos off the floor. When it comes to Lego storage ideas, there are many Lego Wall designs floating around out there, but this one from Dukes & Duchesses offers a good explanation that should get your creative juices flowing. Like many Lego wall ideas, this one hinges on using Lego Base Plates. Attach them to the wall, and you’re off to the races.

6. IKEA Hack Lego Table

Doesn’t everyone love an IKEA hack? This toy storage table uses the Lack table and Sambla storage bins. From there, all you need is a drill, a few screws, and some basic craft skills to attach the plastic storage bins to the underside of the table.

7. Use a Multi-Purpose Craft Cabinet

Heavy-duty plastic craft and hardware storage cabinets make excellent Lego storage tools. These come in various sizes and are made by countless brands, so a version likely fits your needs perfectly. Many of these cabinets are stackable or can be mounted to a wall—the one we’ve linked here has keyhole slots molded into the back for quickly securing it to a wall, which will keep kids from knocking it over. Even so, it’s made of high-impact polystyrene, so it’s tough to break or damage.

8. DIY Lego Table With Storage Bins

You’ll notice that many great Lego storage ideas involve IKEA products, which includes this one. The Handyman’s Daughter uses the Lack tables and Trofast bins in a very intuitive and easy-to-construct way. We can fully sympathize with the author, who says their kids’ playroom “looked like a Lego store exploded” before they started trying out some creative Lego storage ideas.

9. IKEA Trofast Rolling Lego Table Hack

We’ve got a double-whammy from The Handyman’s Daughter because we couldn’t pick just one of their unique Lego storage ideas. What rockets this particular IKEA hack into the stratosphere is that it’s on casters, so it rolls, and it’s got some extra design touches to make it look like a giant Lego block—something any kid is sure to love.

10. Official IKEA Lego Storage Boxes

IKEA also makes an official Lego storage box, and we love their look. These are simple and inexpensive, with a minimalist aesthetic but a Lego base texture on their lids, so they double as a play surface. They also come in multiple sizes, making them perfect to mix and match.

11. DIY Lego Table With Custom Lego Knobs

This DIY Lego Table from Infarrantly Creative is all about the knobs—we love them! This is a relatively straightforward modular shelf build, and the drawers can be removed completely, enabling kids to put them on the floor while playing and then refill them with ease. Lego base plates are used for the top surface, so the table acts as a play surface. Then the entire thing is finished with a creative paint job using classic Lego colors, so it fits right in with the Lego aesthetic.

12. DIY Lego Storage Ottoman

You’ll love DIY Danielle’s take on rehabbing a beat-up old Ottoman and repurposing it for Lego storage. This takes a little (not a lot!) of craftsmanship, and your Ottoman conversion will probably need to be customized to suit your needs a little. But the real highlight here is that the top surface of the Ottoman is double-sided, with one having Lego play surfaces while the other looks like a regular old coffee table. So when the kids aren’t playing, everything’s neat and tidy.

Let your creativity out to play!

Legos are all about thinking outside the box, coming up with cool ideas, and having fun building them. We encourage you to carry a little of that energy into your own creative Lego storage ideas. Your kids—and your feet—will thank you!
